It’s enough!

I ran down the stairs to get as far away from the Lord as possible. From reality. The harsh reality.

I’m a whore. I run a brothel. My henchman lies wounded in a bed. My girls are in pain.

More reality! When I reached the bottom, I rolled up my sleeve and dug my nails into my arm. Hard! Harder! A drop of blood trickled down as a diffuse pain swept across my wrist. I exhaled, relieved, leaning against the circular tower.

“Madam?” Milly asked.

She must have been worried to see me in such a state in this part of the castle.

“I’m fine. I’m just getting some fresh air, Milly. How are you?”

She evaded the question.

“I didn’t dare disturb you this morning as you weren’t in your room.”

“Yes, I know. Well, here I am.”

“Would you like some lunch? It’s getting late.”

I had no idea of the time, but it was easy to believe that the day was advanced when I observed the sun.

“Here’s a letter for you,” she added.

“Did you open it?” I wondered as I discovered the broken seal.

“I didn’t, Lady Lily. Laird Dougal MacNeil is checking your correspondence.”

How discourteous! That clan leader was getting on my nerves more and more with his carefree manner. His rude attitude had a way of bringing out anger in me so deep down that I hated the fact a stranger like him could have such power over me…

I pushed his image out of my head and unfolded the letter to get a glimpse of the sender, Apolline.

She must have given it at the crack of dawn this morning for me to get it so quickly.

This lout had stuck his nose into a private exchange. I was enraged just thinking about it!

I followed Milly into the great hall and sat down to read. She left me for a moment before bringing me a dish of eggs, bacon and bread, as well as some beer. I thanked her and bit into my hard bread. I pushed my plate onto the table and settled down to read.

Lily,

I couldn’t resist the idea of this epistolary correspondence for a moment! I can’t wait to hear all about your days in Doune.

Since I’d rather tell you now than at the end of my letter, I wanted to let you know that Lara’s body has been found on the banks of the River Teith, just outside the village. I’m absolutely overwhelmed. How awful! May her soul rest in peace… I hope with all my heart that these atrocities are now behind us.

As for you now, Lazare is not happy to admit it, but he says that he found the Lord with whom you have a contract to be… courteous and honourable. Putting the whole situation together, it’s reassuring for him and me to know you’re well. Is this Lord just a piece of paper for you to sign?

I’d like you to forgive me for my behaviour when you were at the house. You asked me about your brother, and even though I know your intentions, I closed up like an oyster.
